Since 1889, mysterious lights have appeared outside Rostov, a remote Texas town. Ranchers believed them to be the campfires of rustlers, but campfires don’t rise and fall, merge, and change colors.

In World War I, the locals believed that the lights came from German forces massing on the Mexican border. In the Second World War, the US military built an airfield there and used planes to try to discover the secret of the lights. In 1980, the entire town set out on a “Ghost Light Hunt.”

For more than a century, each attempt to get close to the lights met with horrifying results.

Now police officer Dan Page follows the trail of his missing wife from New Mexico to Texas and discovers that she and hundreds of spectators have become enraptured by the lights. After a crazed gunman fires obsessively into the crowd, the stage is set for more death.

To save his wife, Page must confront the mystery of the lights. His desperate search reveals a government conspiracy that dates back to World War II. The abandoned airfield is more than what it seems. So is a nearby observatory, with a purpose even more mysterious and lethal than the lights themselves.

Drawing his inspiration from the real-life Marfa lights, critically acclaimed Morrell packs The Shimmer with his trademark blend of action and terror.

The Shimmer eBook David Morrell

A cop's wife has become entranced by ghost lights near a small Texas town, and the cop doesn't understand why. Meanwhile a rogue intelligence officer is trying to create the ultimate weapon that is somehow tied to the lights. It gets complicated and messy, but it all sounds plausible. We had a ghost light near where I grew up in Oklahoma, so I can believe the mystery of it and the people's reactions. The characters are all well-rounded and believable, and the action is well-paced. I liked this one as much, if not more, than Creepers.

The Shimmer eBook David Morrell Reviews

The Shimmer begins with a well-written description of violence and destruction, setting the stage for a super-charged thriller with plenty of action and thoughtful mystery. The subsequent energy of the story is filled with historical references, scientific hypotheses, personal reflection, and geographical descriptions. The book zips along at a furious pace, working hard to provide a scientific or perhaps supernatural explanation for a phenomenon.

Using fictitious names and novel ideas, Morrell demonstrates the complexity and confusion of what is known as the Marfa lights, an odd event that occurs in the Southwest region of Texas outside of the town of Marfa. Having experienced the Marfa lights as a youth, I was able to relate to the story as it progressed. Morrell's use of strong character building, knowledge of weaponry, and ability to write a page-turning novel finds fruition in this book, proving that he is once again the master of the genre.

Unfortunately the violence seemed excessive at times, resulting in an almost cavalier attitude toward the constant killings that occurred. While two or three murders can set the tone for the perpetual violence, twenty or more at one time seems excessively tragic and unrealistic. The constant deaths and mayhem did not match the thoughtful explanations of the lights nor the development of the history of the people. Morrell's normally rich prose that balances action with psychological insights and characterizations is not as enlightening nor as captivating in this book.

What began as an excellent story seemed to fizzle into disturbing, dark violence that did not serve the overall plot. Some of the confusion of the overriding goals of the antagonists were solved, but the solutions were predictable and rather pointless. While not his best effort, it is still an entertaining book that is worth reading as another interpretation of the famous lights. Master writer David Morrell remains an outstanding and thoughtful writer of the genre. Each book is unique and special.
I am a big big big David Morrell fan ever since I read First Blood back in junior high! And I have to say he didn't let me down like some reviewers have said. I thought this book was a very good read. It kept me turning page after page wanting to know just what was going to happen... and I loved how he weaved the different stories about the different characters together. It was not my favorite subject from him, but I enjoy how he is willing to step out and go in new and different directions.

Frankly you just can't go wrong when it comes to David Morrell... if I can only write a book half as good as his worst story, then my authoring dreams will have come true.
good read if you like scfi stuff
I wonder whether it is written by david morrel. Its a hopeless novel when compared to his excellent works like Fraternity of the stone, Brotherhood of the rose, English assasins etc. Too many charecters, too much of impertinent dialogues and a shallow plot. The predictability is too apparent, thats where you start losing interest. There is nothing in this novel which will keep you glued to it. May be its the earlier work of Morrel where he did not learn the tricks of the trade. The end is pathetic so much so that you will not like to go to it. My reccomendation dont touch this book even if given free
This is a great story with wonderful subject line that leaves you wanting more. But in the end you know there can never be answers for such ancient mysteries! I wish Morrell would have delved deeper into the circle of rocks on the Air Base. Seems he left enough for perhaps another tale about the lights.
The story accelerates from a marriage in trouble into a world of intrigue, danger, and wonder. Loved the flying scenes!
First, the thing about Morrell is he's a great writer. I'm talking about his style and his ability to draw readers into a scene.

That said, I really liked The Shimmer, but it's not his best. An issue I had in the first quarter of the book was the reason the protagonist's wife left him, and the protagonist putting up with being led in circles trying to figure out why she split.

Of course, that's just a small quibble, since the book delivered in terms of plot and mystery. Others who wrote reviews complained because the mystery surrounding the lights wasn't resolved. True, but I didn't mind so much...the novel left me with a satisfying feeling of resolution...

As an aside, I was hoping The Shimmer would have some sort of central, mysterious artifact at its heart. I'm a sucker for those types of thrillers, but alas there was none.

Anyway, for those of you who are like me and dig that sort of thing, I would suggest picking up some of Preston & Child's earlier work, especially _Relic_ or Dietrich's _Napoleon's Pyramids_ or _The Charlemagne Pursuit_ by Steve Berry, or a fantastic new novel I recently discovered _Telesma_ by Dalton Keene.

All these are definite winners.
