Fostered by rampant avarice and political uncertainty, life in Zimbabwe is worthless - only the elite survive. For a fortune in gold and tribal treasures, some are willing to sell the very soul of an emergent country.

At first I thought the whole book would be a river trip but then the story switched to the gold mine. The description of the witch was unnecessarily gross. I was let down when the story suddenly ended without more about the cave painting or the underground river. I suppose his next book goes to those sites as he did a lot of referring to what went on in the first book.Product details

Empress Gold edition by Jeffrey Whittam Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Jeffrey Whittam wrote a good but somewhat far fetched first half to his novel. There would have been plenty of easier ways for Lee Goddard to smuggle his gold out of Zim instead of putting his and his wife's life at risk in a red herring distraction voyage down the Save (Sabi) River. The story of the chase was riveting and well written. If the story ended with him escaping with the gold it would have been a great novel. Rex and the helicopter pilot could have easily been bribed or shot.
To agree to take the gold back and return to Zimbabwe was insanity and from there on the story deteriorated into complete garbage. It is almost as if the 2 halves were written by different authors. The nonsense about the meeting with the ancient witch doctor and her weird assistant under the Zimbabwe ruins is nonsensical and pointless and adds nothing to the story.
Excellent story , many plots and well written . Introduction to the ruins of Zambezi very interesting as was unknown to me and inspired a fair bit of research Not sure where Mr Whittam will go with the saga next as the ending left me with a lot of questions but will look forward with interest to his next missal .
great for us wilbur smith fans.
After a very hectic , page- turning first half the story limped to a really unrealistic -premise ending. There was never a chance that Mugabe was going to be overthrown right now by the Matabele, desirable and all as this would be ! A disappointment !
So many books with an African background seem to follow a familiar pattern which is easily predictable. Not so with this book - it's unique in its style and storyline. The descriptions are perfect, - the author obviously knows his country, the book is a thriller without being hideously and unnaturally gruesome. In the style of Wilbur Smith but with a different slant. A very good read - get it, enjoy it!!
THIS BOOK WAS MOSTLY ENJOYABLE UNTIL WE GOT TO "THE KOCKUS POCKUS" ENDING.
MYSTICAL GODS AND PAST IDOLS AND TRIBAL BELIEFS COMPLETELY CHANGED THE STORY AND MADE IT UNSAVOURY.
This is the second book after ' sons of africa'. There is obviously going to be a third...hopefully even more! I would say if you loved andy of Wilbur Smiths novels, you will love this one too. And amazing historical fiction of the gold rush days in the veld of Africa. Amazing story telling by Mr. Whittham. I will be reading EVERYTHING this man writes from here on out. i love his style.
